chapter 6

Alpha and Omega

Kayley stared at the tattoo on her wrist as she considered the words in her grandfather’s journal. It foretold a future event involving the three pens combining into an extraordinary force for a single purpose. Although the thirty-year-old clues led them to a powerful underground chamber, she couldn’t help but feel the massive responsibility of their true destiny beginning to unfold.

Arnie sensed her apprehension. He decided to divert her concerns by discussing their glimpse into the Imperīum’s devious plans. “So, that was weird,” he admitted. “It seems odd to know that a fight is coming, and there’s nothing that we can do about it except stand our ground.” An emptiness flooded the pit of his stomach. He usually ran away from fights, not toward them!

The hair on Erik’s arms stood on end. “A fight? What fight? I didn’t see any fight!”

The teens discussed the purple-tinted movie reel. After they observed the conversation with Donovan and the three other Imperīum board members, they realized that each of them saw something slightly different.

The gravity of their situation started to worm its way into Arnie’s mind. He flaunted a strained smile. “The vision didn’t reveal the battle to you?” Kayley and Erik shook their heads. “It was a bit of a blur, but there’s some sort of confrontation coming,” Arnie said. “We need to prepare for it. I have a feeling it will take all three of us to succeed!”

Kayley refocused her gaze on her tattoo. She wondered if she could wash it off. “I saw Donovan and three other people talking about their intent to acquire the Pen of Protection and how it would lead them to the other pens and eventually allow them to take over the world!”

Arnie nodded. He saw that, too. Kayley gushed about how she recognized one of the board members as a musician. Then, she cringed at the idea of listening to the pop artist’s music ever again now that she knew of the singer’s ties to the Imperīum.

Erik identified another member as a former Olympian turned entrepreneur. However, neither he nor Kayley could place the third person.

Arnie gladly informed them that the final member of the board belonged to the tech elite. When Kayley and Erik plied him for more information, he had difficulty forming a response. He collectively pooled all his energy into forcing his brain to cooperate.

“He has produced an impressive succession of advanced innovations. Nothing happens in the technology sector without this guy creating it, influencing it, or knowing about it,” Arnie said, pushing out the words as swiftly as he could. His mind numbed.

Erik wrinkled his nose. “You don’t recall anything else? I saw so much more!”

Arnie and Kayley flanked Erik, confused. “What did you see?” Kayley asked.

“I saw the same three famous people, but they kept talking about magical ink and how they could sell it to the highest bidder.”

Kayley gasped, but Arnie supposed it only made sense to have magical ink for enchanted fountain pens. He rebuked himself for not making the connection sooner.
